An Unlikely Hero
The book of Esther contains 5 main characters:
Xerxes- The 5th king of the Persian Empire. His reign
began in 486 B.C. after the death of his Father Darius the First.
He was a violent, selfish man whose focus was on that of power, money
and sex. He was first introduced in Esther
1:1.
Vashti- She was Xerxes Queen. She was a woman of
character and integrity. She is first introduced in
Esther
1:9.
Mordecai- A Jewish man whose family was exiled when Jerusalem
fell. He was a member of the tribe of Benjamin. He is the
cousin of Esther and her adopted father (he adopted her after her
parents died). He was a man of integrity and faith. He is
first introduced in Esther
2:5-15.
Esther- An orphan who was adopted by Mordecai. A woman of
both inner and outer beauty and a woman who feared God. She is
first introduced in Esther
2:7.
Haman- He was the second in command of the Persian
Empire. He was a man consumed with himself and full of hatred of
the Jewish people. He is first introduced in Esther
3:1-2.
